Making healthier choices at a Super Bowl party can be a challenge with all the tempting snacks and drinks. Here are some tips and a delicious, healthy recipe to help you enjoy the game while still making healthy choices:

Quick Tips for a Healthier Super Bowl Party

  • Don't show up starving: Before heading to the party, eat a high protein snack (think:greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein bar) so you're not overly hungry when you arrive. This can help you avoid overeating on unhealthy options later.

  • Fill up on fiber and lean protein choices: Scan the food options and prioritize healthier choices like veggie trays, fruit platters, grilled chicken skewers, or shrimp cocktail. Opt for lean proteins and foods high in fiber to keep you feeling satisfied.

  • Watch Portions: If there are less healthy options you can't resist, that's okay! Just be mindful of portion sizes. Use a smaller plate to help control how much you're eating, and avoid mindlessly grazing throughout the game.

  • Be Mindful of Alcohol: If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation and choose lower calorie alcoholic drinks like 100 calorie seltzers or light beer. Alcohol can add a lot of empty calories and lead to poor food choices. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water to stay hydrated and pace yourself.

  • Bring your own non-starchy vegetable dish: If you don't know if there will be healthy options available at the party you're attending, no worries! Offer to bring a healthier dish to share. This ensures that there will be at least one nutritious option available, and you can encourage others to make healthier choices too! Try my recipe below if you need an exciting new healthy party recipe!

Black Bean Corn and Mango Salsa

This black bean, corn and mango salsa is a high fiber dip that everyone at your party will love! Cilantro, jalapeno, red onion and lime juice punch up this recipe with lots of great natural flavor. I serve any dip at a party with mini bell peppers and chips to provide a lower carb, higher fiber alternative to chips. This is a great option for people trying to watch their blood sugar levels or trying to reduce calorie intake! Give it a try at your Super Bowl Party this year!

Feel free to adjust this recipe to your liking. If you want to add more spice include more of the jalapeno seeds or add a serrano pepper. If you want less spicy you can completely omit the jalapeno. I used frozen mango because I had it on hand but fresh mango is best if you have a ripe one. Pineapple would also taste great in this recipe if you don't care for mango. Lime tortilla chips pair great with this recipe in addition to bell peppers for serving. I hope you enjoy!

List of Ingredients

  • 1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed (low sodium or organic is best)

  • 1 cup mango, diced

  • 1 cup cooked corn, cooled

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1/2 red onion, diced

  • 1/2 bunch cilantro, roughly chopped - add more if you would like!

  • Juice of 2 limes

  • Zest of 1 lime

  • 1 packet italian dressing mix
